Launched on 1er March 2023 at the Agricultural Show, the new national “anti-food waste” label aims to encourage and distinguish actors in the food chain that significantly reduce their food waste.

This label was developed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Ademe and Afnor Standardization.

The first sector to be covered by this new label is distribution, in particular large and medium-sized retail outlets, wholesalers and catering trades (butcher's shop, bakery, fruit and vegetables, etc.), whose shops and establishments will be able to be individually labeled on the basis of demanding common criteria. These criteria concern the purchase, marketing of food, management of unsold food and donation.

This label also ensures that each labeled store achieves a good performance rate in the fight against food waste. It will also allow consumers to choose a store that takes concrete action on a daily basis against food waste.

Labeled establishments and shops will be able to display the logo of the label on their front, accompanied by a star for commitment to the approach, two stars for mastery and three stars for exemplarity according to the reduction rate of waste achieved and the practices put in place to fight against waste.
