The information on origin of the meat shall extend to processed meat

Restaurants, canteens, food delivery... Since March 7, 2024, food service establishments must now display the origin of meat used as an ingredient in processed products.

Already applicable to fresh meat, the obligation to inform consumers of the origin of the meat extends to processed meat. Examples are sausages, nuggets or minced steaks.

What are the new reporting requirements?

The information to be provided to the consumer on the origin of meat used as ingredients in meat preparations and meat products shall be as follows:

When the the birth, rearing and slaughter of the animal from which the meat is derived took place in the same country

‘Origin: (name of country)’

Beef and veal when the birth, rearing and slaughter took place in different countries

‘Born and reared: (name of country of birth and name of country or countries of rearing) and slaughtered: (name of country of slaughter)’

Pigmeat, mutton and poultry when the birth, rearing and slaughter took place in different countries

‘Reared: (name of the country or countries of breeding) and slaughtered: (name of the country of slaughter)’

For each meat concerned, the information to be provided to the consumer must be communicated before the conclusion of the contract, in a visible and legible manner.

Please note

This is the same information as that concerning the origin of the meat.

Who is involved?

These new requirements apply to the following institutions:

  • establishments offering meals to be consumed on site;
  • establishments offering meals to be consumed on the spot and to be taken away or delivered;
  • establishments with no on-site dining room and offering only take-out or delivery meals.

What sanctions?

Any failure to comply with these obligations shall be punished by a fine of:

  • 1 500 € maximum for a natural person;
  • 7 500 € maximum for a legal person.
