Obligation to display the origin of meat in restaurants

Since February 19, 2025, restaurants must inform consumers about the origin and provenance of the meat they serve. This measure makes it possible in particular to enhance meat of French origin.

In order to increase consumer confidence, restaurateurs must comply with information obligations on the origin or provenance of the meat they serve.

These obligations stem from the Decree of 13 February 2025, which repeats the provisions of a previous Decree whose application ended on 29 February 2024.

The application of this new decree is not limited in time.

What information should be provided?

Establishments offering meals to be consumed on the spot and to be taken away (or delivered) must provide the consumer with the following information:

Tableau - The particulars to be indicated concerning the origin or provenance of the meat

Meat

Particulars to be indicated

When the the birth, rearing and slaughter of the animal from which the meat is derived took place in the same country

‘Origin: (name of country)

Beef and veal when the birth, rearing and slaughter took place in different countries

‘Born and raised: (name of country of birth and name of country or countries of breeding) and shot: (name of country of slaughter)

Pigmeat, mutton and poultry when the birth, rearing and slaughter took place in different countries

‘High: (name of country(ies) of breeding) and shot: (name of country of slaughter)

This information must be given in a manner that legible and visible (display, display on maps and menus, or other media).

What sanctions?

Institutions that do not comply with these new disclosure requirements will be penalized with a €1,500 maximum. In the event of repeated infringement, this fine may be increased to €3 000.
