Advertisements supported by vehicles

Advertising on land vehicles, water or air is regulated or forbidden. We're explaining the regulations.
Vehicles used primarily for advertising
Advertising on land vehicles (cars, motorcycles, trucks, etc.) is regulated, in particular for vehicles whose main use is advertising.
The surface total advertisements on each vehicle must be maximum equal to 12 square meters.
Ground vehicles used or equipped for the main purpose of serving as a medium for advertising or pre-signs are no parking in places where they can be seen from a road (street, avenue, square, etc.) open to public traffic.
They shall be prohibited from circulation in each of the following circumstances:
- In convoy of 2 or more vehicles
- Abnormally slow speed
- In the places prohibited from advertising (notably in classified and registered sites, to historic landmarks, in national parks and regional, the natural reserves, etc.).

The light advertising shall be prohibited on land vehicles.
Of derogations these prohibitions may be granted, exceptionally, by the traffic police authority (the mayor on national, departmental roads and all public or private roads open to public traffic within conurbations) on the occasion of specific events.
Vehicles used mainly for other functions
The advertising related to the activity carried out by the owner or user of the vehicle is permitted, provided that the vehicle is not used or equipped for the main purpose of advertising.
Example :
A craftsman (e.g. plumber, electrician, etc.) using a car to travel to his customers is permitted to advertise his company on that car.

The light advertising shall be prohibited on land vehicles.
Advertising broadcast by means of a banner towed by a aircraft is prohibited.
The advertising related to the activity performed by the owner or user of the aircraft is permitted, provided that the aircraft is not operated or equipped for the primary purpose of advertising.
Inland Water Advertisements
Advertising on inland waters is framed.
She's authorized only on vessels and under all of the following conditions :
- Vessels must not be equipped or used primarily for advertising purposes.
- The only advertising devices allowed are flat panels.
- The total area of the panels shall not exceed 8 square meters.
- The panels shall not be luminous, luminescent, reflective or illuminated by projection or transparency.
- The signs shall measure to the maximum:
- 5 meters horizontally, without being able to exceed 10% the length of the vessel
- 0.75 meters vertically, not being able to rise more than one meter above the level of the lowest point of the freeboard or, in the absence of a freeboard, the lowest point of the fixed plating (hull of the vessel).
Boats supporting advertising are prohibited from parking or staying on bodies of water or parts of bodies of water situated within 100 meters the following places or in these places:
- Natural monuments and listed sites
- Hearts of national parks and natural reserves
- In built-up areas, in places where external advertising is prohibited (notably to historic landmarks, in regional parks, etc.).
These boats can also not park or stay within 40 meters of the outer edge of a roadway open to public traffic if visible from this lane.
They are also prohibited from traveling:
- Less than 300 meters from each other
- At abnormally low speed.
Please note
By way of derogation, advertising related to the activity carried out by the owner or user of a vehicle is not supervised, provided that the vehicle is not used or equipped for the main purpose of advertising.
Specific provisions at sea
At sea, the surface the total number of non-luminous advertisements displayed or settled on a ship shall not exceed 4 square meters. The calculation of this area excludes the following:
- Markings affixed to the hull, structural parts, sail or goods of ships mentioning their make, manufacturer, operator or sponsor
- Advertising, on the occasion of navigation linked to nautical events, for the benefit of the sponsors of these events.
Exceptions may exceptionally be granted by the police authority on the occasion of specific events.
Failure to comply with any of the prohibitions or limitations on advertising borne by vehicles shall be sanctioned of a fine administrative of €1,500.
The maintenance, after formal notice, of an advertisement supported by a vehicle which does not comply with the regulations shall be punishable by fine of €7,500 (natural persons) or €37,500 (legal persons).
