How do I get an EMB packing code?
Verified 11 October 2023 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
The prepackaged products, whether food or not, must include a registration to identify one of the following professionals:
- Conditioner or packer (the person who carries out the prepackaging)
- Manufacturer of the product (the one for whom the prepackaging is carried out)
- Importer (established inEuropean Union).
This identification on the packaging shall be made, at the choice of the trader: either clear (full name and address of the trader), or coded. In the latter case, it is referred to as “ EMB packing code ”.
What is the packaging code EMB?
The packager code takes the form of 5 digits (corresponding to geographical code the municipality and department from which the product originates), preceded by the statement " EMB ”. If there are at least 2 professionals who carry out the same activity in the municipality, the code is supplemented by one or more additional letters to identify each company.
Example :
‘EMB 29004G’ for a packer located in Bannalec in Finistère.
However, the packaging code EMB is different of theEuropean health accreditation (or health stamp) intended for any establishment which prepares, processes, processes or stores animal foodstuffs or foodstuffs of animal origin (cheese, cold cuts, seafood, etc.).
The packager code and the sanitary stamp (oval pictogram) are traceability codes. They may appear every 2 on the same package.
The health approval shall be composed as follows:
- Country of origin of the product
- Department Number
- Number of the municipality
- Number assigned to the production company
- The abbreviation ‘CE’ denotes the European origin of the product.
Example :
‘FR 85.086.022 CE’ for a producer located in Falleron in Vendée.

One list of traceability codes in France is made available.
