Indices of durability and repairability
Verified 19 April 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
L'repairability index new electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) must be calculated in order to be consumer information at the time of sale. This is one score out of 10 that evaluates the repairability equipment. L'durability index gradually replace the repairability index as of 2025. It will incorporate criteria for reliability, robustness, serviceability, and may include, for some EEE, an assessment criterionsoftware and hardware enhancements.
A reparability index must be calculated in order to be announcement when selling new electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). This calculation, and its parameters, is by producers or importers, for each model of equipment placed on the market.
The calculation and its parameters are then distributed to distributors and sellers, so that they can communicate them to consumers.
The durability index will replace the repairability index from 2025 for certain EEE: porthole and top televisions and household washing machines.
Please note
The sustainability index will gradually replace the repairability index for the other categories of EEE in the coming years.
Index of repairability be displayed and communicated to buyers for the following products:
- Wired vacuum cleaners
- Non-wire vacuum cleaners
- Robot vacuum cleaners
- Front-loading household washing machines (porthole) (replaced by the durability index from 7 April 2025)
- Top-load household washing machines (replaced by sustainability index as of 7 April 2025)
- Household dishwasher
- High-pressure cleaners (high-pressure water-propelling cleaning apparatus)
- Multifunction mobile phones (smartphones)
- Televisions (replaced by the Sustainability Index from 7 January 2025)
- Wired electric lawnmowers
- Electric battery mowers
- Robot electric mowers
- Laptops
Repairability
This index must be calculated for each equipment model placed on the market.
FYI
The distributor of the product shall communicate calculation details and score to seller.
Index of repairability is calculated from the sum of the following scores:
- One note out of 20 concerning the documentation availability time technical and maintenance advice to producers, repairers and consumers
- One note out of 20 concerning the dismountable nature of the equipment understood as the number of disassembly steps for unitary access to the spare parts, as well as the characteristics of the necessary tools and of the fastenings between spare parts
- One note out of 20 on spare parts market uptime and delivery times to producers, spare parts distributors, repairers and consumers
- One note out of 20 concerning the relationship between the selling price of spare parts by the manufacturer or importer and the sale price of the equipment by the manufacturer or importer
- One note out of 20 on category-specific criteria of equipment concerned
The repairability index is obtained by adding the 5 scores obtained and then dividing this total by 10 to express a synthetic score on a scale of 1 to 10.
The method of calculation differs according to the type of product. The methods of calculation can be found in orders for each category of products:
- Wired vacuum cleaners
- Non-wire vacuum cleaners
- Robot vacuum cleaners
- Front-loading household washing machines (porthole) (replaced by sustainability index as of 7 April 2025)
- Top load household washing machines (replaced by sustainability index as of 7 April 2025)
- Household dishwasher
- High-pressure cleaners (high-pressure water-propelling cleaning apparatus)
- Multifunction mobile phones (smartphones)
- Televisions (replaced by the sustainability index from 7 January 2025)
- Wired electric lawnmowers
- Electric battery mowers
- Robot electric mowers
- Laptops
Please note
If the figure after the first decimal place is less than 5, the score shall be rounded down to the next decimal place. Example: A calculated score of 5.43 should be rounded to 5.4.
If the figure after the first decimal place is 5 or more, the score shall be rounded up to the next decimal place.
Durability
The sustainability index must be calculated by producers or importers, for each model of equipment placed on the market subject to the sustainability index.
This will apply to:
- TVs, starting January 7, 2025
- To porthole and top household washing machines, as of April 7, 2025
FYI
The producers or importers must communicate free of charge and in a paperless format to distributors or sellers at the time of listing and delivery of equipment for each model of equipment placed on the market:
- The sustainability index according to the mandatory terms and conditions and signage
- A table showing the details of the elements taken into account in the rating of the sustainability index
These items are also provided free of charge from distributors to sellers of EEE, at the time of listing and delivery of those products.
The calculation gives a score out of 10 that can be one decimal place after the decimal point.
The sustainability index shall be calculated from the following criteria and parameters:
- One note out of 10 relating to the repairability equipment, taking into account in particular the accessibility of the technical documentation, the ease of dismantling, the availability and the price of spare parts.
- One note out of 10 relating to the reliability equipment, which takes into account in particular resistance to stress and wear, ease of maintenance and servicing, as well as the existence of a commercial guarantee and a quality process.
- For certain EEE (not applicable to household televisions and washing machines), a mark on a scale from 0 to 10 relating to thehardware and software upgrades.
The durability index is calculated from these scores and coefficients. It is expressed as an overall score on a scale of 0 to 10.
The method of calculation differs according to the type of product. Orders available on Legifrance specify for each category of product this method of calculation:
Please note
If the figure after the first decimal place is less than 5, the score shall be rounded down to the next decimal place. Example: A calculated score of 5.43 should be rounded to 5.4.
If the figure after the first decimal place is 5 or more, the score shall be rounded up to the next decimal place.
Repairability
Where to apply the repairability index?
The seller must communicate to the consumer :
- The repairability index, at the time of purchase, including:
- For sales in stores, either on each item of equipment offered for sale, or in the immediate vicinity
- Or, for distance sales, in a visible way in the presentation of the equipment and close to its price
- The repairability index, within 15 days, by electronic means, to any person who so requests for a period of at least 2 years after the last unit of a model of equipment has been placed on the market
- Settings has made it possible to establish the repairability index of the equipment by any appropriate method
Display Format
The color codes The following are used to display the index if the score is between:
- 0 and 1.9: red, reference Pantone 186 C
